Trevor Manuel, National Development, Capabilities Approach

Trevor Manuel in his speech on the National Development Plan said that they will be taking a capabilities approach to economic capacity development. X2O and with Career Maker, Ebio and Pro. Japie Kroon from North West University delivers this capabilities approach in economic capacity development.

Slide 1 (X²O Exposure to opportunities)

Careerdevelopmentplan.net offers a solution to economic capacity delivery with exposure to opportunities. We write this as X²O, it is a geometric growth model, thus to the power 2. We learn, work, invest and benefit together. Everybody gains, the top end keeps on growing faster and the bottom ends catches up because of the transfer process, which is in line with the speech made by Minister Trevor Manual as part of the national development plan.

You can find the whole speech on the web on info.gov; this is what we work from. The plan predicts that by 2030 we will live in a community that we have remade, and we would be proud to be part of this community. This will be a community where everyone will grow economically, personally, as a family, as a community, as a tribe and as a nation. Mr. Trevor said the leitmotif has been that we want to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality. Consistent with the diagnostics they found the highest priority is education, which is exactly what we aim for.

Slide 2 (The opportunity is in bridging gaps)

We have found over the last 15 years that there’s a tremendous opportunity in bridging the gaps. As people cross the gaps, cross the bridge, everybody gains, they most of all, but all of us still gain and grow, and the country grows as well. Everybody knows that the haves have all the health, wealth, happiness, choices etc. They also have an abundance of knowledge and experience. The not-haves are in short supply, they need education.

Through education health will come, poverty will reduce and safety will increase. They have a scarcity of knowledge, experience and resources. If you look at the opposite triangles the knowledge is on top, with few people. Little knowledge exist with the many, it’s simply a transfer process for everybody to gain. When you look at the flows: knowledge down, people up, then the whole pyramid grows upwards, we all get healthier, wealthier and happier. A fantastic vision should we achieve it.

Slide 3 (Economic Capacity Delivery – Trevor Manual’s speech)

Let’s look at economic capacity delivery, Minister Manual also state that three complementary enablers are required. The first is an active citizen, the second is a capable and effective state, where the state must become more effective but the citizenry must also use the state more effectively. The third enabler is strong and mature leadership.

Our program works with local leaders, supporting the elected and appointed leaders to grow faster. If we can get an active citizenry in harmony with government, academic institutions, business etc. it will set a new paradigm in development.

Slide 4 (I want a job, I want the right job, I want to grow in my job)

People say: “I want a job, I want the right job, I want to grow in my job.” The people at the top wants to grow faster in their jobs, the people in the middle just want the right job and the people at the bottom, the broad mass of South Africa, simply want any job. If we can address those three requests, which we believe we can, we believe that getting a job and earning more can be a very exciting experience. We believe this after many years in business and many years in pro bono work with universities and communities.

Slide 5 (Insight, opportunity & knowledge spread)

Let’s look at the insight, opportunity and knowledge spread, what is the current situation? We like to look at it in six levels. People that currently sit with vast talents but they don’t have the knowledge, insights and access to resources to use those talents. Then people who are under- and unemployed in this area and then people who are safely employed but wants to grow, people that are great but wants to grow, people that are fantastic and want to grow.

If you look at the six natural levels of work competency, you can see that knowledge is up here and little knowledge is down here. That is what we believe drives the stratification, this ever increasing gap between rich and poor, which is no good for anybody and the more people that can become economically active the more big business, the government, everybody will grow.

Slide 6 (The three companion products)

Let’s briefly look at our three companion products; it is the Career Maker System, which makes an impact and a difference in increasing your productivity and your salary within a fairly short time with a high impact. This product is also offered within companies, within work teams, and we hope shortly within government institutions.

Exposure to opportunity X²O that include work and study readiness and is meant for people that take a little longer and have a few more gaps to bridge. Let’s briefly take a look at Career Maker. X2O and its brochure are on the web and we’ll take a look at that just now.

Lastly, if you look at ebio, it has similar processes, with individual growth in six steps and it’s also available on the web, you can read it when you have the time. Lastly, we found that with scalability it is very important that the community mobilise the people behind the leaders, for the leaders, by the leaders. Therefore, we have created the More South Africa space, where people can join up for activities like project management, forums, groups, and newsletters. There’s a store where the products and services plus the companion products and services are offered in and by the community, supported by a highly competent set of managers and management teams. Thus we believe we deliver exactly what Minister Manual recommended. We can thus play a role in the vision of the future of South Africa.

Slide 7 (Productivity in sync with formal education)

Productivity must be in sync with formal education, and to integrate the three products, if you look at the six levels, the mass at the bottom, the few people at the top, and ebio creating an army of learners, working with and through institutions, primary, secondary, tertiary education, as well as education within companies, supporting the gaps in core proficiencies, and growing from there.

Secondary, Secoza NPC offers the services where the learning curve is a bit longer because of the gaps being a little bit bigger and there being more gaps. Working with a solid measurement process that gives you solid feedback on the web, it’s like a dashboard of people’s development, community development, how many are engaged and so forth. Career Maker offer the same services at the top, where there’s a higher impact, the core proficiencies already exist, it’s a slightly higher level offer to people employed on the higher end. Just to integrate the three then, the focus is in the middle, but such that each one grow by itself bringing people up, growing people up. Each area grows by itself and thus the overlap grows. That’s a concept they often call a balance.

Slide 8 (Start with the purpose)

Look at every person, whether employed at the high end or at the very bottom end,, we deliver a model that is suitable to them to make their purpose clear. The purpose drives objectives and actions, and synchronizes with adapting your vision and mission very dynamically. We all know that a person with a clear vision, a clear purpose, is almost unstoppable. We found that to get recognition; we have to get people with clear visions and missions that are clearly aligned with their objectives and tasks.

Secondly what people have to understand very early on is that there is a game with rules, they must know the rules and play by them. So many people spend their energy fighting the rules, instead of spending their energy where they can make decisions, make a difference using and building on the rules. This creates people that are easy to govern, people that fit and drive and maintain the rules. They also understand that there’s unlimited space where they still have influence, but they can still explore and make it known, while growing their space of production. It’s very simple models and we have a whole lot of exercises underneath to make sure this is implemented.

Slide 10 (Get the job you want from any starting situation)

We are now going to look at how to break out of the box. This is like a glass plate, it is all perceived, none of it real, but where people are at the moment it is awesomely real to them, it is the absolute truth, you can’t argue that perception is reality. To change those perceptions they have to go through three simple steps, they must know what they currently do and are, and what they want to become and want to do. Then they have to prepare and communicate this clarity. In our full sets you will get all these activities in full. They grow what they currently do and what they want to do.

They then clarify this to communicate it so they can break the glass plate, go beyond it, break out of the box and get to the great spaces. Again, these are simple actions, we just give some examples.

Thirdly, still, breaking out of the box, getting the glass plate to disappear and get to the great space, they need to then engage and communicate with the people where they want to go, people that have the knowledge that they want. Go be useful to them, work with them in an apprentice, intern style. They will work for knowledge at this time, not so much to get paid. At some early stages pay tends to be survival, but we also coach people in the same technique that recently moved from well over a $100 000 in earnings to 1.3, 1.4 million dollars in earnings. So the process works right at the top, works right at the bottom, at the bottom it’s just slower, community, home, and resources must be integrated. Again, just some selected steps.

People get recruited, go through a process, get the hard skills of their industry, and align the whole process with the National Qualification Framework Level 1 to 5, and through phases that we take them over a period of time. The bigger the gap the longer the time but the process is the same. It’s a clear process, I just want to show you briefly what is behind it. The process is designed to break the boxes and break the glass plate and move to the great spaces. This big migration is exactly what Minister Manual talks about.

In your infrastructure there’s outbound values and inbound values, demand leading to supply, so everybody benefits, everybody gains, everybody earns as they learn and even learn to earn.

We’re looking at careerdevelopmentplan.net’s foolproof Career Maker System and specifically at ‘I must earn more money right now’. We believe that if people move from the boxes they perceive to be real and instead towards a different space everything becomes better and they will continuously earn more. Our more senior people increase their salaries by 20 to 30 plus percent a year by approaching the same work a little bit differently, by treating their environment differently.

How do they do it? How do they get to earn more is the question there. We have experience of over 40 years from building teams, then businesses, then doing professional coaching in a wide area, including students at universities and schools, the last being mostly pro bono. The processes are very similar. When people understand how to go implement it and they feel safe and secure they find it becomes very exciting. The foolproof Career Maker System is secure, safe and certain. We hope you find it the same.

Let’s look at moving from the boxes to great spaces and earning more right now. We all work and invest to everyone’s mutual benefit. You cannot lose if you follow this approach. We usually start with the words ‘they’, ‘them’, ‘always’ and ‘again’, feeling that control is external, when in reality the external view always lead to frustration because the people out there do not worry so much about you. They tend to worry about themselves and the things they are paid to worry about.

When people communicate clearly what they already do, they clearly understand what their value is, they deliver more value and they communicate that value, they get paid for what they do, because people know what they do. People can’t pay you if you don’t know, and most often people don’t know. Most people expect that somebody must notice how hard I work. People don’t really pay you for hard work, they pay you for effective work; they pay you for value. We’ll have more stories on that as we go forward. Once you’ve gained insight, you’ve prepared it and you’ve communicated it to the right influencing people, you cannot but lift your salary by 30%. At least you will pave the road towards a 30% increase. Let us look at the simple three steps to earn more right now:

  1. Know what you are currently doing, and know what you want to do more of and want to do less of.
  2. Prepare that message, prepare a story, be clear about it, with the right knowledge, insight and clarity people will come to you. A man with a plan is always welcome.
  3. Thirdly, once you are prepared you will engage and communicate your current work list, your wanted work list, and the list of work you want get rid of and delegate to other deserving people.

Let’s take a look at your role as a cogwheel in the great machinery of industry, production and economic communities. If you drive the whole thing drives, you don’t have to wait for the engine to drive you. What we find is that most people never develop the ability to make their cogwheel fit to the engine, the engine is not going to adapt to us, we can only adapt to the engine. The board and executive is there to see that we do more with less capital, since that would generate a higher capital for shareholders, meaning all of us get more capital at a lower cost to produce even more. That will grow my career, it grows my job, and it grows what I earn.

In the production engine, in the teams I play, the contribution I make, I cannot but grow my salary 20 – 30% a year. if I fit and I’m clear, I’m always wanted, I’m always in demand. Lastly, and the most important, the client comes shopping, what does he buy from us? What do I contribute to what the client buys? If I grow my insight into our clients and their wants, the industry, our investors, our businesses and our competitors, my ability to contribute takes a leap. I also need know what to say no to, which is almost more important than knowing what to say yes to.

We found over the years in our companies, in our coaching and in our pro bono work with students and schools that saying no seem to come very hard to us. If people are confident to what they say yes to, they become very confident what they say no to. Once you know what you really want to do, you get loaded with what you want, and it’s easy to say no to what you don’t want. When the client comes shopping he must find what he wants. My contribution to the team must be clear, our contribution to the executive and the board must be clear so they can get more capital for us and keep the shareholders very happy. If everybody does well I cannot help but do well as well, provided I communicate. That is one more way to move from the perceived boxes to the great spaces.

Let us look at the first one: know what you currently do for whom. What we have found in our companies and recently with some people we coached, people don’t quite understand the value of their contribution, how they as a cogwheel fit in and what they do. Remember that you are much more than your work, we’ll come back to that one. In your work, understand your value. Understand and discuss the value of what you do and what you want with the influencers around you.

What should you do more of? Recently that was my first question to two senior people, Albert and Ken, what is it that they want more of? What is it they want less of? Clarifying that and writing it down, made them go back to their workplace and change the content of their work in less than a few weeks. Once you know and you are confident to communicate because you are prepared, you automatically move up the scale. You know what to say no to, you know what to say yes to.

Let’s move to the next one: prepare. If you look at preparation to communicate, we find it very useful if you use people around you, bounce it of them, and get their support. This can be colleagues, friends, family, and even selected recognized business and industry gurus. They would love it if you approach them with a plan, with respect and you recognize them. You will hear more about that. Identify those who have the insight, who can help you. Practise these communications like you practise for a speech and any situation in real life. Exercise in front of a mirror even, exercise in safe groups around you before you go to the outside world, the influences, the clients, the industry people, and the shareholders.

Elsewhere on the website we talk extensively about the power of stories and how to tell stories and why you tell stories. You’ve got to be clear and comfortable with stories, show your insights, show your research, and show your preparation. Thirdly, engage and communicate your current work list and add to it your wanted work list. Add to it what you don’t want and your plan to delegate. With the wanted list you will have a plan to volunteer. Keep doing what you are currently doing, because if you don’t get your job done you can’t do any of these things.

Ask and share with selected influencers. Use sharing and questioning skills very effectively. Elsewhere on the website we’ve put pages for asking and sharing skills and there’s a vast amount of information. If you’re already good with it ignore it. Many of us need to practice it and more of us have to use models to do it because it takes quite a long time to make it an ingrained habit. It takes a lot of exercise. You know it takes five years to learn golf, ask me, especially if your talent for golf is a bit low like mine. Respect and acknowledge those influencers. I’ve never seen anyone refused if they arrive with a clear plan and respect. They are able to say why they respect the person and why they approach them in absolute humbleness for their advice.

We find that close to 700 students at North-West University, South Africa, get holiday work that they have chosen using this technique. A third of them get jobs that were never advertised. They’ve hired themselves. Elsewhere on the website we will give you a video and the processes to hire yourself at the company of your choice, location of your choice, job of your choice. If we then look at earning more right now, which is our objective here, what stops us are those perceived boxes. The boxes are built out of many perceptions, and unless we move, explore and gather new insights, the box will remain the same.

That brings us to the statement that more of the same equals less because we keep on expending effort and we don’t get the results we want. We must change; we must think differently and get rid of our perceptions, simply through gaining insight, knowledge and some awareness. You must know what you want to do, you must prepare and communicate, and you must engage the influencers and communicate with them. It’s very simple.

Who are you? You are much more than your work skills. You are a family person, a community person, and all kinds of things. But you’re also a person that works. Your store of assets in this case, your natural talents, your experience etc. brings you to the point that you currently do what’s on your to-do list. You can see where your strengths exceed your to-do list and where you need to build some strength. We’ll talk much more about that in another video. Your current list, knowing what you do, preparing and communicating, will be based on your current activities and your current store of assets.

It’s interesting that everything anyone of us can possibly need is available; we’ve proven that over and over, we’ve built 28 companies over time. I like to start companies and then pass them on. We’ve been running incubators for a long time and in those companies we have developed people. That is where all of this comes from, originally based on Hewlett-Packard processes as we knew Bill and Dave in the seventies. It’s all out there for you.

You make a staircase of your own and you climb it yourself. It can be a bit scary to make and climb the staircase; this process is discussed in more detail in another video. Let’s get started. Explore and identify what you contribute right now, re-frame it, refresh it, understand it, and match it to your natural strengths and your required strengths. Prepare with people around you. You will know who among your family, colleagues, and friends will help you. Also identify people you admire, remember how to approach them so they never say no. They will help you prepare, then you are ready to engage the influencers.

If you arrive at the influencers with a clear plan, clear insight, and a wide understanding, they cannot but notice you, notice what you do and compensate you properly because they will start competing for you. In this process you already grow your store, you grow your relationships, you grow your insights and you practise skills that naturally grow. In this process you already get double benefit by growing your store.

When you do this, even if you just want to earn more right now, it’s good to keep in mind that your job, industry and company need to align and you need to place your store where it suits you in the centre. Align yourself in your job, the work you do and the career you want. This will effect that you stay in charge of your own salary increases: how can they not pay you if they know what you contribute as a cogwheel in this great engine we call the economy, business etc.

You will end up with continuous possession of insight, knowing where you are and where you are going, gaining the confidence to communicate it clearly, and this will take you to the great space where your store grows and let you grow. Earn as much as you want, where you want and when you want to.  While your clear purpose in this case is to earn more; we recommend that you keep your work, job, company and industry aligned. It will be like a vision and mission for your career, your objectives, tasks and goals are aligned, because your mission is clear, you can call that your strategy. There is much more of this model in our later detailed videos as we progress.

It’s good to identify what is known and recognize the way it is. The ? typically have no influence in this area. Again, if I can use Ken and Albert, we explained to them that in their businesses there are simple ground rules that are like laws in a country, obey the law while you work to change them. You can’t really spend your energy in this area, it is very negative.  Rather understand the area where you have influence and synergy and it’s known. This is a very good area to play in. There is a third area that’s very exciting, where I would rather spend my time. There are new options, you look forward and there is a future vision, rather than fighting the rules. People so easily get into the trap of fighting the rules; avoid that negative at all cost.

This is the long term future which is unknown and has no immediate influence. We are not looking at that today. It works extremely well when you concentrate on a specific area at a time. The idea is to move from ‘I have a job and earn money’ to where you live in a great space with everything you want and money. Only one part of us consists of work. We are also social, spiritual, and physical; we are also friends and parents. We are many things. Only a small part is work. Let’s keep that in the back of our minds.

We would like to show you how these ideas move you from your current situation to the work of your choice, the job of your choice, the company of your choice and the industry of your choice. Many people argue with me that you can’t choose them all at the same time. That’s correct. You start with choosing your work and you have a clear career aim. In order to design your clear career aim it’s a good thing to start with as many change ideas as you can. You first go wider, you explore, and then you use the explored information when you are ready to engage.

There are always three steps in each element: you explore, you prepare and you engage. Look at your past experiences, the work you’ve enjoyed doing, what you have enjoyed at school and what you have enjoyed anywhere. Look at your past and look at what may be, what you think will give you joy. I will discuss all of them at the same time but first make notes on explore. Let’s look at specific transferrable skills. People find it hard to look objectively at all their past activities, the projects they were involved with, and the teams they were involved in. The idea is to focus on specific elements related to transferrable skills. The same with aptitudes, you can see from your past involvements where your aptitudes are. You can also get feedback from the people you were involved with. We will give the specific model to ask feedback.

There are models; some published, some not yet, on the web to assist you will these tasks. When you look back at your past activities your interests become clear. Many have to look at both their past and their desired future at the same time. Know what you believe and what you value. It’s very important to know that there are no right and wrong beliefs and values, there are just beliefs and values. If you choose an area of work, job, company and industry, that align closer with what you believe and what you value, it becomes a lot easier to thrive in that environment. If your values and beliefs differ a little from your chosen environment it becomes tough. So what do you believe? It’s good to ask why you believe it, but much later in the program we’ll get back to why.

Our beliefs and what we value were often not freely chosen, they are a product of past experiences, family, community, work, etc. All of those formed what we believe and what we value and why. We encourage you to go plus plus so you expand. It’s very important to keep your roots and grow your roots and expand from there.

Lastly, one of the most valuable things is who we relate to and the relationships we have formed, who and why. These relationships were often formed out of past activities and not freely chosen. You will see that freely chosen is a very important concept that keeps recurring. What’s more, there’s a process to go about choosing freely what suits you, why you relate to people, what you add to them, how you add to them and how you build relationships.

It’s a very clear process learnt at Hewlett-Packard way back, applied in all our multi-million dollar companies that we were privileged to build. All of this comes from the people in those companies who managed them to maximum productivity. Thereafter we did a lot of pro bono work at universities, schools and communities, under social ventures. We also did a lot of professional coaching at companies and with people, to grow their careers and grow the people; this is how you grow a company.

Relationships are critically important. Very few people realize that the people they relate to relates to many more. And those relate to many more and this never stops, until we are six levels away, fifty to the power six. We assume everyone knows fifty people that we don’t, then fifty to the power six are more of less all of the people on earth. So six levels away you can reach anybody on earth. It is simply a process or a model that explain how to achieve this.

Who and why? If you look at it segmented in this way you will arrive at a very long list of where you are and what your assets are. Just like a company has assets, a person has assets. Going forward, you take this initial process and engage with the people around you. This could be at home, with friends, at work, anywhere where you know people. If you check these things with them you will find that your list grows very quickly. You understand your assets much better. We haven’t met anybody who is not pleasantly surprised when we do this segmented process and they check it with the people around them. They also prepare the message and we are very excited about the power of stories.

Take this prepared message and engage the people you’ve identified, people who do similar work, people who do similar jobs, people in the companies you have targeted and people in the industry you’ve targeted. All of a sudden these relationships explode and you will get more career ideas. Recently, Ken, somebody we are coaching, couldn’t believe how many people he knows and when he was prepared, when he approached them, he got so many career opportunities, and even job offers that could double his $100 000 plus salary. It is an amazing process; nobody goes through this without getting new job offers, university students as well. We even had younger people that got sponsorships once they’ve done this process.

The key thing to remember is to keep your career, your work and your job aligned. If your career area grows, your work area grows, your job area grows, the overlap with the company, the industry and value-add grows. You want to move up the pyramid of production, from where you were a person at entry level, you grow into the teams and you keep on growing. You have to accelerate and arrive at a strategic level.

The process applies whether you have an expert career or whether you are on a management path. The expert path is somebody that grows in expertise and is very valuable to everybody in a company; we have a very specific process to manage that path. We are talking today about careerdevelopmentplan.net and its product: Career Maker System. This is a safe, secure, proven and now foolproof system on how to change careers. We have found over the years that the thing that stops most people is fear, fears are from perceptions, they are not real, they are just perceived. It’s really important to know that these fears are never real. FEAR simply stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear generates perceptions of risk, huge risks, and the risks are perceived since the fears are perceived. One of the many fears is fear of the unknown and fear of failure.

Fear of failure, where FAIL is a First Attempt In Learning. During everything we’ve learnt in life, from walking, talking, bicycle riding to driving a car, we have failed, and we have learnt from this failure. The Americans in California call it very nicely failing forward. With bicycle riding you even lost some skin. What happens to people is that they feel safe in some job or career, and they perceive that change is going to mean losing that safety, instead of the view that change creates new safety. You can see it as a box that you’ve got to escape, or a prison, and all you need is the key because the key to success can only work from your hand opening the door from inside. It can never be opened from the outside.

The other way to look at this whole safe career change is to realize there’s a lot you can see up here that you cannot really touch. It’s the glass plate principle, you feel you can touch it but you bump. What you bump against is that glass plate or the box or the prison that consist of these perceptions and fears which are not real. When you look at career change, midlife career change, change at 40, it is an issue of the work you do, the job within which you do the work, the company within which you have the job, and a company is always part of an industry. If you can get this aligned to suit you, life must be very close to perfect.

We like to break into a second area where your work aligns with your job and then with your long-term career aims, and if that aim is clear it’s like a beacon you put out there. You can publish it on linkedin, you can tell your friends, you can send letters, and all the people you know who know people can send it, because you are clear. That brings us to the challenges of career change in this model that I have briefly touched on.

The first challenge is to reach this clarity, and that is why part of the process is to search for information, prepare the information, and choose where you want to be engaged: job, company, industry. Make sure it lines up with your long-term career, so that you continuously aim for your career beacon. All of us can do that.

We have achieved this with thousands; thousands in our companies, because we realized that when people have this alignment and they have sufficient new challenges their productivity jumps. We also realized that if we can get people productive quickly it is very beneficial for the company. It was very expensive to hire new people; we had to get them productive quickly. This is where these processes were born.

The processes have been honed during the last 12 years in coaching at a high end but we have engaged in a lot of pro bono work at schools, universities and communities as well. I must admit the communities were the toughest, that is where the processes really got simplified, and became foolproof. Clarity is critical. That clarity must be prepared and communicated and the alignment must be kept. Through communication you clearly engage the company and industry, you engage the teams you work with, and you communicate and engage with the people around you.

A young lady, Laura, came to me and said: “My husband says if I keep on working in this company I’ll be stupid, I must leave immediately.” I sat down with her and we went through this process, we looked at the plusses in the company and we look at the minuses in the company, we made a balance sheet. She went home and told this new story to her husband. As it turns out, she was mostly focussed on the issues and problems that she had, and as we addressed a lot of the problems, it helped clear the minuses. Afterwards they said that if you leave this job you’ll be a fool.

It is a change in perception, using the information, preparing the information, communicating the information. You will hear those three steps in many different models and guises, but it’s always just the three steps. Get hold of new information and facts, organize the information, and communicate what you’ve organized.

It’s always just three steps to maintain alignment, provided you know what you really want, what makes your eyes light up, what makes you happy to go to work so you never feel like you work a day in your life. I sometimes almost feel a bit guilty to acknowledge that for nearly 25 years I’ve been working in that space where I never felt for a moment that I am working. 20% to 30% goes into work I would like to delegate. I try to delegate since I believe if I don’t delegate I steal somebody else’s work, but you can’t always delegate so a percentage will always be tough.

You can view this alignment and clarity as overcoming the challenges which makes your fears disappear. It’s not as if you address them, by getting clarity and information the fears simply go away.

The following is an equivalent model that you can use. The purpose of your career, your career aim, your career beacon during the short term is to choose the work you do, in the job you do, for the company and the industry you want to do it in. This should align with your long-term personal wishes for earnings, career, how much you work, where you work etc. That means that strategically you keep your long-term career aim, it’s your long-term career vision and mission, almost like a company vision and mission. In the short-term your objectives and your tasks always align with your strategic plan.

That plan, just like in any company, you must be able to communicate succinctly: why and what about your career, why and what about your job, why and what about your industry and why and what about your choice. All of this is about you; you are the centre of this always. However, if you put yourself first you come last.

What is important is the service you’re going to deliver to the team around you, your company and your industry, and back home. From that service you will get your returns. Always look at what you can contribute, how you can grow what you contribute. Look at your store of goodies that you can use to be productive, that store will grow very fast. You can choose where you apply your store, who buys in your store what you offer.

We hope we’ve made it clear that a career change at any time in your life can be a safe and secure process and your fears could disappear, provided you realize you’ve got to be aligned, you address the challenges, you communicate with the people around you, your purpose of career, your career beacon and your career aim is clear. That’s the goal. We have found three types, three main categories of changes:

  1. The ones that are so urgent they burn
  2. The ones that are just getting warm: “I want to change.”
  3. The ones we can see that will get warm in the future, we know change will be good.

Let us start with urgent change. This typically comes from companies that downsize and industries that change; the key thing is the job may disappear very soon. “I better make a plan before it gets too urgent.” The other way of thinking is:” I had enough of this job.”, “My job sucks.” That’s what we often think. I often found that it isn’t the job so much that sucks; it is the work that sucks. I had situations of people coming to me at work, in my companies, that say: “My husband says that if I don’t change this job soon, he is going to kick me out of here.” We went through the detail, they go back home, they tell a different story, the next day they come back and say: “The husband says I will be a fool if I leave this job.” It is merely a change in thinking.

It is often the work or the way we look at the work that sucks, but something sucks, it has to be changed. Let us look at one of the most urgent needs in our 40’s: I really must earn more money right now. It typically comes from the fact that many issues drive that change. However, what we found more often than not, people are responsible for a whole bunch of upcoming people, they are responsible for people seeing their life out, and even somewhat responsible for people in their current generation who’s not doing so well. The responsibilities at 40 and after 40 could be quite daunting. If you simply want to change because you’re not paid enough, it is often a very simple communication problem, and I like that one because it’s the quickest to address.

Another reason: people frustrate me. This can be for many reasons. Often we find that looking at things a bit differently solves this problem, but often it has gone so far that changing company, or at least changing the vision in a company is practical.

People stay in the same circumstances; mostly they just realize they are not happy, the travel bugs them, the workplace bugs them, the industry bugs them, and there are so many possibilities. They just feel they carry a very heavy weight. To get rid of this weight can be done in a number of ways. A change of company may be necessary, but often it is just a change in perception and looking at things differently.

Let us look at people who are really happy in their job, career and industry, they just need more challenges. This is also a very straightforward process, typically achieved in a few months, that usually leads to a 20 – 30% salary increase within 18 months. Making the change and communicating properly with a proper plan.

There is also the natural change; it’s just a restless feeling, I can do better, I can do more. The other one is that the job has become too easy, it’s repetitive, and repetitive is never good for us. We always say repetitive is like a groove, there’s an old adage that says the difference between a groove and a grave is just the depth. It’s like you are not alive anymore and you need to change that, you need to get out of the groove. It is simply a process that follows the same steps as the others.

In each of these cases the solution consists normally of three broad steps. We apply each of them for change, growth, issues etc. It’s to one way or another identify the root causes, prepare a lot of information and facts, think of possible alternative solutions, communicate that with the right people, and you have a fantastic solution. We find that when a man arrives with this clear insight and a clear plan, he is never refused.

Six years ago at North-West University in South Africa they couldn’t find practical work in the industry for students. Today 700 students find their own practical work simply because they know where they are going, they know why they want it, they can say why and what about a company, why and what about an industry and they talk to the right people. What makes it so exciting, about a third of them get jobs at companies that didn’t even have a position, but when they meet this enthusiastic, sorted-out person they create a job for him.

In summary, I would like to say that a career change can be an exciting experience. The Career Maker System makes it so clear and so easy. Career Change at 40

We are looking at the subject of career management and career change at the age of 40. I have gone through that myself and looking back at my life I would never have started all those businesses, I would have managed my career towards wealth, fun and profit, if only I knew how at the time. Let us look at typically what defines the age of 40.

If I remember all the people and myself in our companies it is an age of big responsibilities; where we are busy helping the new generation, being responsible for the current generation and its difficulties and we are helping the old generation on its way out. It is something we want to do. It is also the time I am forced to look at the rest of my life, we have found that it always happens around age 40, plus or minus a few years.

We are mid-career when we are in our forties and we have to look at what we are going to do for the rest of our working life. We are often in a trap where I have become my job title and my job title defines me. Whereas I am actually many things: I am a friend, a parent and so many other things. Work is just one of the things I do; it does not define me.

What I am, what I think, what I feel and what is within me define me and work as a small part of me. What I would’ve liked to see when I look back, I would’ve like to have seen that my work was more aligned, with nice challenges, while having fun, earning more money and building wealth. I would have liked to see that I have grown in myself, in what I do, with whom I do it, where I do it, and that I had more choices about it. Choices really are the spice of life.

Let us look at a quick process to define and start your career change at 40.

  • What I would have liked to do differently for all the people in the companies I built over the past 30 years.
  • What have I done in coaching since then have been very successful.
  • Typically, the people that follow this process grow their salaries by 20 or 30% over 18 months.
  • They look at work differently, they approach challenges differently and always respond in any situation to grow their options and increase their choices.

You always have a very big in internal “store” consisting of:

  • Your natural talents,
  • Your work and personal skills
  • Your work and personal relationships

You have built this big store using external resources and internalized it over time. To increase our the process all we have to do is identify what we enjoy doing, what the current situation is, what we feel and what we perceive. We can turn those into prepared action with the aim to engage, it only takes a little bit of effort. We talk to friends, do a bit of research, think about it a bit and then talk to people around us, remembering it is all externally available. All you have to do is get it and make it internal. The actual process consists of:

  1. Identify
  2. Prepare research
  3. Engage, communicate with the world

Where I personally coach people through the Career Maker process, I regularly work with people who never realized that they had choices. I recently had somebody who has so many choices and never realized that he had all these choices. All the choices threatened him, because he saw them as difficult choices to make. When we turned it around and aligned the choices with what he wanted, the choices quickly reduced to two or three. These we investigated and he engaged. He is on his way to double his salary from $150 000 per year to probably $300 000 per year by just looking at things differently, he went external to trusted advisors, and he internalized the advice they gave him. He is now comfortable that the road forward is clear, he knows what to do next.

Outcomes of the Career Maker process

The outcome is that you are organized, you take action and you ensure your growth. Everybody loves a man with a plan. Everybody loves a man who is positive, clear, committed, who finds joy and things to do and contributes. For whom there is always a solution, but at the same time, he clearly knows what work to say no to.

Change is so fast today that you may have to choose again in five years. When you have applied this process a few times, change becomes a simple and fun matter. If you look at your career, the company you choose, the industry you choose, yes you can choose them all, that is for sure. It is just a process of identify, prepare and engage. Go external, bring it internal, and at 40 you typically have most, if not all, of these skills and access to these resources.

The Career Maker Process in Short

When considering a career change at 40, you do not want to jump ship. You want to progressively change ships. Most people at 40 have big responsibilities. You need to view your career change as a process, rather than a moment’s choice.

You will use your current work base to gently shift careers. You do more and more of the work you want to do, and less of the work you do not like doing. I found in my coaching that many people can make small changes in their current careers which leads to them becoming very happy right where they are! They never had to change careers, just recognize the opportunities they already had in their current jobs differently.

If it turns out that someone really must make a career change at 40, they have no obvious opportunities in their current jobs, I coach them to use their current job platform and reach out to external sources of knowledge and opportunity. They do this while they stay at their current job and steadily build connections to the right people and places.

In both cases we need to align the work you want do with the job you want to do in the company you do it, even if you remain with your current company. There are some very simple, easy processes to delegate what you do not like. Well-executed delegation frees your time so that you can focus on the work you want to do. View delegation from the perspective of “Others must grow, do not steal other people’s work”. While you delegate the work you do not want to do, volunteer for the work you want to do. Also, get further expertise outside of the company, in specific places, investing in yourself, or just participating for the benefit of those you want to learn from; grow the skills that let you move the job progressively to what you really want and what aligns with you.

When you are clear on your career, company, industry, work and job in the company, you are on your way to building a long-term career, remembering a job is just something you do on your career road. If you look at a career aim once you are clear about industry, company and yourself, it is so simple to make your career aim visible. Use online tools like LinkedIn to make your career aims visible. You will find that jobs come to you to fit your career aim. The real change happens when in a few months you announce your career aim, your support structure: your family and friends are with you and you are prepared for a career change.  You have done your thing, you have engaged, and you are ready with the resources, to move in the direction of your career aim.

Remember that career aim is something that keeps on moving, because our environment keeps on changing. However, at any one time, you must have a clear career aim. You are going to adapt it to embrace change, love change; change is so exciting for the prepared. Change is so threatening to people who are not prepared, remember that fear of change at 40 is simply facts that present themselves as if they are real and they are actually perceptions. Therefore, if you overcome fear, that nasty four-letter word, you overcome the risk you perceive and the risks are never real.

If you move progressively, you identify, prepare, and engage, you never take a big risk. It is an incremental process, you move towards your career aim. You should probably aim to align your career every two to three years; that is about the change cycle now. New opportunities arrive as the industries move, some disappear and some industries arrive. Humans always need a challenge, a change, remembering that change is as good as a holiday. I hope we have shown you that at 40 there are typically these things happening in peoples’ minds. They can align with what, who, where. They can do a quick start, moving from their basal store, they can organize, take action and grow, and they can align perfectly towards a long-term career aim.

We are here to talk about the importance of trust in the Career Maker System; this concerns any career growth and any career access. We have to engage and relate to many people in whichever career, in this case changing or growing your career. Trust basically consists of four elements: openness, reliability, congruence and acceptance. Openness plays a role; it is how you communicate your cover letter, and how you communicate your CV and your references. You have to be open about what went really well, and also be open about a number of situations where things did not go so well. That’s your opportunity to build trust with openness and share how you handled the not-so-good situations.

Reliability happens when your documents, information and attendance is always on time. You also demonstrate reliability with stories from your past. You will notice that we have storytelling as a very important element. Those stories must reflect reliability. You need to able to be absolutely congruent, when you are; people find it very comfortable to talk to you. Congruency also means to reflect what you hear, and that the question is clear. You answer the question and check that the question was answered, it closes the loop and creates and fosters congruency.

Let’s look at acceptance, acceptance of the other, acceptance of the self. Self-acceptance of both strengths and weaknesses clearly show in your cover letter and CV. Also, when you are talking to people over the phone or during an interview, it needs to show that you accept others as they are. It must also show that you are capable to work, fit, adapt and find ways and solutions forward because people are not perfect. I have never met any perfect people. When you work together or you have applied to change jobs it also shows that we are not as perfect as we would like.

I will briefly mention a few notes on this document. Trustworthy is different from trust and the two are linked. Many people are trustworthy, but they can’t build trust, because they don’t practice to be open, ask questions and share information about themselves. If you ask and share you are two-thirds on the way to success. Be reliable and communicate when things don’t always work as planned, but keep ownership. You can be very trustworthy, but to build trust you have to implement this practically in your daily life.

In this case, it must show in your cover letter, I know it’s tough, but that’s why you tell a story. It must show in your CV and every change in your CV must be told in a few words, but it must build your story. If we read CV’s honestly, many of them do not demonstrate openness, reliability, congruence and acceptance. I hope I’ve briefly covered trustworthiness.
